Q: Who are you?
A: We are two! Abigail launched Chic Baby in 2011 as an effort to stay sane pregnant with a preschooler, but no longer teaches classes now to return to the full-time working world. Elizabeth is an Independent Certified Baby Signs® Instructor and teaches all the classes at Herself Mom’s Sacramento location.
Q: When did you get started teaching Baby Signs?
A: We launched the site in July 2011 and started holding classes in Sacramento in September 2011. But we have been signing independently with babies since 2009.
Q: Do you sign?
A: We sign with our babies! We have three children who have all used baby signs very well. In fact, being in classes regularly, Abigail’s daughter had over 15 signs she used by 11 months old. Consistency is the key!
Q: When do you recommend starting classes?
A: You can take a Parent Workshop at any time, even if you don’t have children. You can start Beginning Baby Signs (Sign, Say & Play®) classes starting at 4 months. You can start taking Intermediate Baby Signs (MORE Sign Say & Play®) classes at 10 months or older. On the Grow classes are designed for 2 months all the way up to 5 years of age, depending on the specific class.
Q: I’ve heard that Baby Signs isn’t “real” signs. What does that mean and what do you use?
A: Baby Signs is the first baby sign language program founded on the principal to help parents and caregivers communicate with their pre-verbal HEARING children. The research started out of UC Davis because two moms noticed their little ones using symbolic gestures to communicate (i.e. waving, pointing, making up their own gestures). This means that in our play classes, we teach you baby friendly signs using music, songs, songs, research based activities to boost your child’s development, and of course play in fun classes designed around playtime. All of the signs we teach you are based on ASL, although some signs may be modified to fit your baby’s coordination level. To us, teaching signs should not be stressful. We will not teach you how to sign fluently to an entire song or book. We will teach you simple signs so your baby can point out things that interest him/her, start up a conversation with you, participate in book reading, cope with frustrating situations, boost self esteem, and strengthen the bond with caregivers. So no, we aren’t an ASL program. We’re a program to help you communicate with your baby using simple ASL!
Q: I’ve checked the schedule and nothing works for me, but I really want to take a class. Are there any other options?
A: Our classes are based on the availability at our location and interest level. For example, we regularly teach weekend classes for 9 months out of the year, but during the summer, we tend to drop our weekend classes because there is a lack of interest. Our recommendation is that you contact us to ask when our next classes are OR suggest a date/time!
Q: I came across your site through a web search or from a different website but I don’t live in Sacramento. How do I find classes?
A: You have three options! (1) You can contact us and we can refer you to an instructor in your area. (2)You can check the Baby Signs® website and search for an instructor through the “Find Classes” option. (3) You can become an instructor in your area! Contact Elizabeth for more information!
Q: Why do enrollment and registration costs vary?
A: Enrollment and registration costs sometimes vary depending on where the class is located. For example, if a class is being held at a location that charges a higher rental fee, we have to raise tuition a bit. However, the cost of the kits and materials will never increase. The costs may also vary because we are offering a discount! Check often on our Facebook page for announcements on discounts and coupons!
Q: What if I want to enroll in a class, but the series has already started?
A: If you’ve only missed one class, you can still register late and make-up the first class at a different day or in the next series. If the class is already two classes in, we recommend that you wait until another series starts. Since a class series is only 6 weeks, it shouldn’t be too long before you can complete an entire series. In the meantime, we also recommend you take a Parent Workshop or attend our free story-times!
Q: What’s your makeup policy if I miss a class or my child is sick?
A: We limit FOUR MAKEUP CLASSES PER 12-WEEK SERIES. We typically have multiple classes running at the same time and have them running every 12 weeks, so you are more than welcome to join us in another class at another time if you have to miss a class. If your child is sick, please keep them home to ensure that you both have the best experience in class. No one wants to sit through a class when they’re not feeling well. If you’re recovering from a cold and just have the sniffles, you’re welcome to join class if you feel comfortable. We do disinfect and clean our toys and materials regularly. But please contact the instructor prior to attending a make-up class just in case it has been rescheduled due to bad weather or other conditions.
Q: I’m in a moms group, could you do a presentation for us? What about at my work? I’d love for my coworkers to learn more about the program and benefits.
A: We always will schedule free presentations for moms groups or businesses, and we especially love those who work with families and babies. Just contact usto schedule a date/time. As always, we can come to you or your workplace.
Q: I work with professionals who work with families and babies. What if we want to schedule a workshop or training?
A: As far as scheduling a workshop or training, we are more than happy to schedule a Parent Workshop or ECE Training. You can find more information about these different options here! Since one of our instructors is a Certified Early Childhood Educator, we can offer CEU’s following an ECE Trainings. These trainings will be a based on a group rate and Parent Workshops will be charged per person. If you are a non-profit group or business, we can apply to waive the kit requirement and/or offer a Professional Development kit in place of the Complete Starter Kit or full ECE Kit. Once we figure out the best fit for you, we will send you a registration form to complete registration once the number of attendees and desired kit option is determined.
Q: I’m a childcare provider/childcare center and I’m interested in incorporating Baby Signs® into my curriculum. What are my options?
A: If you are a small childcare provider and do not need CEUs, we suggest you schedule a Parent Workshop and just replace the Complete Starter Kit with the small Childcare Provider Kit. You can even invite your staff and/or families to join in this scheduled workshop so everyone is on board. If you are a larger childcare center and are interested in being a Certified Baby Signs® center, we suggest the ECE Training. You will be listed as a Certified Baby Signs® center, get all the materials and resources to be a successful signing center, and have the option of receiving CEUs following the training.
